The Christian life is a journey.
Formation should have a path.

Holy Journey helps both newly initiated and returning Catholics receive the faith more deeply and increasingly live their whole lives in conformity to Jesus Christ by grace within the life of His Church.

A Simple Promise

“No Catholic — newly initiated or returning — has to figure out Catholic life alone.”

A short overview of how Holy Journey helps parishes accompany both newly initiated and returning Catholics through their first year of Catholic life.

The Question Beneath the Question

Good beginnings deserve a next step.

Many adults have encountered Christ, returned to Mass, entered the Church, completed a study, or begun serving. These are not small things. Yet formation can still feel fragmented — for the newly initiated and for those returning to the faith after time away.

Without intentional accompaniment, a newly initiated or returning Catholic can easily feel that the structured support of initiation has ended just when real Catholic life is beginning.

“What comes next?”

Holy Journey is a coherent path designed to accompany both new and returning Catholics through their entire first full year of Catholic life, laying a foundation for lifelong holiness.

Core Movement

Encounter → Formation → Initiation → Accompanied Catholic Life → Mission → Lifelong Holiness

From OCIA to Ordinary Catholic Life

Initiation is a beginning, not a graduation.

After initiation, reception into full communion, or a return to the Church after time away, a Catholic is learning how to live the faith week by week: Sunday Mass, the Eucharist, Confession, prayer, Catholic friendship, parish belonging, vocation, service, witness, and perseverance.

Holy Journey is the continuity layer connecting Christian initiation — and the moment of return — to lifelong Catholic discipleship. It serves the parish by helping extend accompaniment into the months when the new or returning Catholic is learning how to live the faith as a member of the Church.

What Holy Journey Prevents

  • Initiation experienced as the end of formation.
  • Loss of relationships and support immediately after reception.
  • Sacramental initiation without real parish belonging.
  • Early enthusiasm fading without durable habits of prayer.
  • Random volunteering rather than discerned vocation & mission.
  • Assuming initial struggle or disappointment means something has gone wrong.
The First-Year Pathway

Four Movements of First-Year Accompaniment

01

Rooted in Catholic Life

Build stable rhythms of Mass, Eucharist, Confession, prayer, Scripture, parish belonging, and friendship.

02

Accompanied in Relationship

Maintain real human connection through trained leaders, companions, sponsors, or small groups so the person is known, noticed, and supported.

03

Formed for Mission

Help the new Catholic recognize vocation, gifts, charisms, service, witness, family responsibilities, and participation in the Church's mission.

04

Oriented Toward Holiness

Make clear that Catholic life does not end with 'getting involved.' The ultimate horizon is lifelong conversion, perseverance, and communion with God.

Introducing Holy Journey

A whole-person response to the Catholic faith.

Holy Journey is a progressive Catholic adult faith-formation journey that helps both newly initiated and returning Catholics grow in conformity to Jesus Christ by grace within the life of His Church.

It is not simply a Bible study, catechism course, devotional program, or collection of topics. It is one connected journey, helping faith reach prayer, worship, judgment, desires, relationships, decisions, vocation, service, mission, and ordinary life.

Formative Pedagogy

How a Holy Journey Lesson Works

Holy Journey is intentionally formative, not merely instructional. Each lesson creates room for recognition, receives divine revelation, and invites a small, memorable practice for ordinary life.

Faith Becomes Life

Faith is not meant to remain one part of life.

Formation gradually changes how a person prays, worships, chooses, loves, serves, and lives in the world. Holy Journey anchors both new and returning Catholics within the sacramental and relational life of the Church.

Scripture for the Journey
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…”

Hebrews 12:1–2 — NASB 1995

A path of endurance begins by fixing our eyes on Christ.
